National

Growth marketing for technology and saas.

Software and technology companies competing for category-level organic share.

How do you market a technology and saas business?

Technology and SaaS buyers do most of their evaluation before they speak to a vendor. Marketing has to be useful during that stretch: documentation, comparison pages, pricing clarity and honest answers about what the product does not do. 1Digital Marketing builds the content that gets found and cited, separates trial intent from demo intent, and measures both through to revenue.

What Is Different Here

Same disciplines. Different buyer.

Software buyers research in public and decide in private. The winnable ground is the category, comparison and use-case content that gets a product into the consideration set, plus the AI answer visibility that increasingly decides which three products get named at all.

1Digital has been doing this since 2012, with specialists on staff rather than a rotating bench of contractors. We will show you where you stand today against the competitors you actually lose to, and what it would take to change that, before you commit to anything.

The Category

What technology and saas have in common.

By the time a software buyer fills in a form, they have usually read a comparison table, skimmed your documentation, searched your brand name next to a rival and asked an AI assistant which tool fits their stack. None of that appears in a lead source field. The evaluation happened whether you took part in it or not. National technology marketing is mostly the work of being present and accurate during that unobserved stretch.

1Digital Marketing works with software and technology companies on search, content and paid acquisition, and the first thing we usually change is what counts as a win. A demo request and a trial signup are not the same event. One is a buyer asking to be sold to. The other is a buyer trying to answer their own question without help. Treating them as a single number hides which motion is actually working.

The category also rewards content most marketing teams do not own. Documentation, changelogs, integration pages and honest comparison content frequently outrank the marketing site for the terms that convert. That is not a failure of the marketing pages. It is a signal about what the buyer wanted. Teams that grow fastest stop fighting it and start treating those pages as acquisition surfaces with the same care as a landing page.

In This Category

Technology and SaaS, broken down.

Not One Business

SaaS, platforms and IT services buy differently

The category covers products that sell themselves and services that cannot. A self serve SaaS tool competes on time to value, so the job is getting someone into the product the same day. An enterprise platform sells through a committee, where security review, procurement and a named internal champion matter more than the landing page. IT services and MSPs sit elsewhere again: a local or regional buyer, a relationship sale, a trigger event such as a breach or a failed audit, and a contract measured in years rather than seats. One keyword can serve all three and convert for only one.

What Gets In The Way

The problems that show up across this category.

Buyers self educate long before contact

Most evaluation happens in documentation, forums, review sites, comparison pages and AI answers. By first contact the shortlist is often already set. Attribution shows the last click and hides everything that formed the opinion. Marketing measured only at the final step keeps defunding the work that created the demand in the first place.

Product led and sales led need different content

A product led motion needs onboarding clarity, use case pages and anything that shortens time to first value. A sales led motion needs security documentation, pricing logic, procurement answers and material a champion can forward internally. Running one content programme for both produces pages that are slightly wrong for everybody.

Trial and demo are different conversions

A trial signup is self service intent. A demo request is assisted intent, usually from a larger account or a more complex environment. They convert at different rates, on different timelines, into different deal sizes. Optimising one blended conversion rate quietly pushes budget toward whichever is cheaper rather than whichever is worth more.

Creating a category costs more than capturing one

If buyers already search for what you sell, demand capture works and payback arrives quickly. If they have no name for the problem yet, you are funding education with no search volume to catch it, and the return lands much later. Both are valid plans. Confusing them produces a budget built for one and judged by the other.

How We Work

What we do about it.

Cover the evaluation, not just the last click

We map the questions asked at each stage, from problem definition to shortlist to security review, then build the page that answers each one. That includes comparison and alternative pages, integration pages and plain pricing explanation. The aim is to be present and accurate wherever the decision is formed, including inside AI generated answers.

Measure trial and demo as separate paths

Each motion gets its own funnel, its own conversion definitions and its own reporting through to revenue. That makes it visible when cheap signups produce no pipeline, or when a slow demo path is carrying the entire quarter. Budget then moves on evidence rather than on cost per lead.

Treat docs and comparisons as acquisition

Documentation, integration listings and honest comparison content often rank and convert better than the marketing site. We make sure they are indexable, structured, internally linked and current, and that each carries a sensible next step. Sites are built on WorkspaceCMS so those pages stay fast and easy to update.

Questions

What technology and saas ask us first.

Should we publish comparison pages against our competitors?

Usually yes, and the ones that work are the honest ones. Buyers search for those comparisons whether you publish them or not, and if you do not, a review site or a competitor answers the question on your behalf. The page has to be defensible: accurate feature descriptions, current pricing and a plain statement of who each product suits better. A page claiming you win every category is dismissed on sight, and it damages trust with the exact buyer who was closest to choosing you.

How does AI search change technology marketing?

It raises the value of being factually correct and lowers the value of vague positioning. Assistants summarise. They pull from documentation, review sites, structured comparison content and any page that answers a question directly in its first paragraph. We write for extraction: a plain answer up front, specific detail underneath, and structure a machine can parse. We also track how your brand is described in AI answers, because a buyer can now build a shortlist without visiting anyone's website at all.

Our category has very low search volume. Is SEO worth it?

Sometimes, and the honest test is whether anyone searches for the problem even if nobody searches for your solution. Low volume terms with high intent can outperform broad ones by a wide margin, and there is often more demand around the pain, the workaround and the tool being replaced than around the category name itself. If none of that exists, search is a secondary channel and paid media, content distribution and digital PR carry more of the load. We would rather say that early than sell a programme against volume that is not there.

How long is the payback period on this work?

It follows your sales cycle far more than it follows the marketing. A self serve product with a fourteen day trial can read signal in weeks. An enterprise platform with a six month cycle and a security review cannot, and judging that programme at ninety days leads to cancelling something that was working. We set leading indicators for the early period, qualified pipeline rather than closed revenue, and agree up front what would count as evidence that it is not working.

Do we need a new website, or just better content?

Content, usually, unless the site is actively getting in the way. The signs that it is: pages that take seconds to load, a stack that makes publishing a ticket for engineering, no clean way to build comparison or integration pages, and no structured data. When publishing is slow, content programmes stall regardless of budget. We build on WorkspaceCMS for that reason, with the build included in the plan, so a marketing team can ship pages without waiting on a release.
