Get cited by ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini.
AI and answer engine optimization is the work of making a business easy for assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Google's AI answers to find, quote correctly and attribute. It covers writing passages that stand alone, structured data and entity clarity, crawler access and llms.txt, and keeping facts consistent everywhere they appear. Nobody controls what an assistant says, so success is judged by citation and accuracy rather than by rank.
What This Is
Search used to hand you ten links and let you choose between them. An assistant reads the sources, writes one answer and cites a handful of them. That changes what winning looks like. You are no longer competing for a position in a list of results. You are competing to be one of the sources that gets quoted, and to be described accurately when you are. Those are two separate problems, and most firms have both.
It matters most where a buyer researches before contacting anyone. Someone choosing an IT provider, a wealth management firm or a specialist practice can now assemble a shortlist of three names without visiting a single website. If your firm is missing from the sources an assistant reads, or the facts it holds about you are years out of date, you are not on that shortlist. No analytics report will tell you why, because there was never a visit to record.
What changes when this works is that you appear in the answer and the description is right: the services you actually offer, the places you actually serve, the credentials you actually hold. Some of that attention never becomes a click, which is uncomfortable at first. The compensation is that people who do arrive have already been told by something they treat as neutral that you are a reasonable firm to call.
What You Get
An assistant lifts a passage, not a page. We restructure key content so each section opens with a direct answer in its first sentence, makes sense without the paragraph above it, and names the business rather than leaning on a pronoun. Question shaped headings, short declarative openings and self-contained sections are what make a passage quotable.
Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, FAQ and Person markup, applied so it describes what the page visibly says. Entity work goes further: one consistent name, address, phone number, service list and set of profiles across your site, directories, industry bodies and public knowledge bases. Conflicting facts are the usual reason an assistant describes a firm wrongly.
We check that AI crawlers can reach your content at all, since a blanket rule in robots.txt or a CDN setting nobody chose deliberately will quietly remove you from the source pool. We publish an llms.txt stating who you are, what you do, where you operate and which pages matter, then verify the pages render without JavaScript.
We build the list of questions buyers put to an assistant before they buy, including the comparison and cost questions most firms avoid, then make sure a page on your site answers each one properly. Assistants synthesize from what already exists. If nobody in your category wrote the honest answer, they will use whoever did.
We run your question set against the major assistants on a schedule and record whether you are mentioned, which competitors are, which sources the answer drew on and whether the description of your firm is accurate. Where it is wrong, we trace which page or profile taught it that and correct the source.
How It Runs
Before changing anything we ask the assistants directly, using the questions your buyers ask, and record the answers word for word. That baseline tells us whether the problem is absence, inaccuracy or a competitor being consistently preferred. Those are three different problems and they need three different fixes.
We reconcile conflicting information about your firm across your site, your listings and third party profiles, then confirm crawlers can reach the pages carrying the corrected facts. There is little point improving a page an AI crawler cannot read, and none at all in being readable while your own facts disagree with each other.
The pages answering commercial questions get restructured for extraction and marked up with schema matching their visible content. We prioritize by which questions sit closest to a decision, not by which pages happen to be easiest to edit. Depth beats coverage here, because a half answered question rarely gets quoted.
On a set cadence we ask the same questions again and compare against the baseline: mentions, accuracy of the description, sources cited. Assistants change their models and their retrieval without notice, so this is a monitoring loop rather than a project with a finish date. Findings feed the next round of content.
Worth Knowing
The most common assumption is that this works like search rankings, with a slot to win and a lever to pull. There is no slot. There is a model deciding, per question, which sources to read and how to summarize them, and it can answer the same question differently twice in a row. Nobody controls that. Anybody selling a guaranteed placement in an AI answer is selling something they cannot deliver. What you can control is whether your content is reachable, whether it answers the question in a form that can be quoted, and whether the facts about your firm agree with each other everywhere they appear.
Reporting
We report presence across a fixed question set on each assistant, whether the description of your firm is correct, which sources were cited and which competitors appear beside you. We also track referral traffic from assistant domains while being honest that it undercounts badly, because many people read an answer and then search your name directly. The metric that misleads is any single position number. There is no rank to hold here, and we do not guarantee citation. What we can show is movement from absent, to mentioned, to described correctly.
Where It Matters Most
Owners search for an MSP after an outage, a breach scare or a failed insurance questionnaire.
Marketing to households with minimums, where discretion, introductions and long consideration decide it.
Marketing an advisory practice inside SEC and FINRA ad rules, built around referrals and life events.
Markets
Questions
If yours is not here, a free strategy call is the fastest way to get a specific answer about your market and your numbers.
Book a Free CallNo, and nobody can. Assistants decide what to cite question by question, models get retrained without notice, and the same prompt can return different sources on two consecutive attempts. What we can do is remove the reasons you are excluded: blocked crawlers, content that cannot be quoted in isolation, facts that disagree between your site and your profiles, and questions nobody at your firm has answered in public. That work improves your odds reliably. It does not make them certain, and we will not pretend otherwise.
There is real overlap, because assistants lean heavily on content that already ranks well and the technical foundations are shared. The differences are practical. Search rewards a page that covers a topic thoroughly. An assistant rewards a passage that answers one question completely in a few sentences and can be lifted without its surroundings. Search cares mostly about your page. An assistant cares about your entity, which means what third party sources say about you counts for more here than it does in classic search.
It is a plain text file at the root of your site telling AI systems who you are, what you offer, where you operate and which pages carry the important answers. It is a convention rather than a standard, and no assistant is obliged to read it. It costs very little to publish and it removes ambiguity about your basic facts, so we treat it as cheap insurance rather than a mechanism. The heavier work is the content itself and the consistency of your facts across the web.
That is a genuine decision with a genuine trade off, and it depends on what your content is for. If your pages exist to win clients, blocking the crawlers removes you from answers your buyers are already reading while your competitors stay in them. If you sell the content itself, the calculation is different. Most service firms want to be read. We will show you exactly what is blocked today, often by a CDN rule nobody chose on purpose, and let you make the call.
Google's AI answers are one surface among several, and they draw largely on Google's own index, so classic search work carries over well there. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Copilot use different retrieval, different source sets and, in some cases, a live web search at the moment of asking. A firm can be quoted heavily by one and invisible in another. That is why we test a fixed question set across several assistants instead of reporting one number and calling it AI visibility.
